Employment and outside earnings is the category most commonly referred to as MPs' second jobs. It covers any paid work outside parliament, including speaking engagements, consultancy, journalism, broadcasting, directorships, and ongoing professional roles. Payments from a single source must be declared once they exceed £300 in a calendar year, along with an estimate of hours worked.

Of the 650 UK MPs, 305 have declared employment and earnings interests totaling £9,519,829 across 542 separate entries, with an average of £33,286 per MP who has declared such interests.
